Artist's Reproductions

What are the benefits of giclée reproductions of an artist's original work of art?

In the past there was no easy or accurate method to reproducing an artists original work of art in a manner that retained the essence of the artistic work. When reproductions were made they were printed as posters on paper which effectively lost the look and feel of the original artwork. However, times have changed. Now with high quality digital capture capabilities and advances in inkjet printing quality, allowing for a wider color gamut than traditional printing presses and the ability to print onto canvas and fine art material, the ability to make accurate reproductions of original artwork that retain the essence of the original art is finally here. Each reproduction is printed on material similular to the original with the same textured feel and retains a near perfect match to the colors of the original work of art.

What does this mean for artists?

In the past an artist only had two options for selling their artwork: sell their original piece, usually at a high price for it was the only money that could be made from the original print, or, have the artwork reproduced as poster prints on paper, usually mass produced at a low print price because it was obviously a printed work and therefor had to compete on the mass poster print market. But now that fine art reproductions are possible a third option has emerged. Artists can now offer limited edition fine art reproductions of their original artwork that retains the feel of the original piece at a significantly higher price than poster prints while allowing the artist to retain ownership of the original artwork. This allows an artist to gain greater revenue from their artwork as the reproductions retain the look and feel of the original, are suitable for professional framing, and therefor do not have to compete with the poster print market.
