What are the benefits to making giclée prints of a photographer's image?
In the past photographers generally shot their images and made photographic prints from their film. Custom effects were possible such as: cropping, glossy black & white printing, sepia style prints, burning in the edges of an image and expensive airbrush editing. But now with software such as Adobe Photoshop all these options and many more previously impossible are now readily available. A photographic print can be altered to look like watercolor artwork or an oil painting with the application of a plug-in filter. Therefor, photographs can be made to appear as artwork or altered to give a customized style. However, when some of these effects are applied to a photograph and then printed on photo paper they loose some of the customized or artistic style created by the filter. But when you print these same altered files onto canvas or fine art watercolor material they keep their artistic flare intended by the artistic filter.
What does this mean for photographers?
The ability to print onto additional materials gives the photographer additional options to create a photographic image with, or without, artistic effects that obtain an intended creative style just by the inherent texture of the material itself. This expands the possibilities for a photographer who wishes to give a stylized presentation, an artistic feel that can mimic traditional artwork, or create unique effects with their images that can only be done with innovations in software filters or by digital image editing.
